by Dave Cleinman If you are a regular subscriber of my newsletter, you have seen many articles on motivation and self-belief. What follows is a simple and fun strategy that will help you take these abstract concepts and turn them into a usable reality. Play this game with someone you care about deeply, bounce ideas off each other, and write down the ideas that are generated. Playing this game should take about an hour, or so, and can be done again and again until you have a fine-tuned set of dreams, goals, and plans. 1. Start by asking yourself: “What if I could…:” What if you could have anything you wanted, or do anything you desired, or achieve something you formerly believed wasn’t possible. The trick here is to find what you desire most, practical or not. Nothing is out of reach unless we tell ourselves it is. 2. Now that you have nailed down your deep desire, the next What if… Should sound something like this: “What If I could find someone who has already done it?” Or “What If I did some research on how this thing I want works?” 3. Think in terms of actual execution. “What If I followed what someone else has done?” “What if I found an expert who could help me?” “What if I truly believe this is possible…” The point here is to develop faith that what you desire IS possible, because it almost certainly is. And, because belief is so key to success, finding a mentor is helpful, but seeing that normal people have accomplished what you desire is completely empowering. 4. “What If I got started today?” What If I’m not afraid of failing?” What If I can start small and take things one step at a time?” Motivate yourself through fear killers. Take action and damn the consequences, so to speak. A large part of the reason people avoid following their dreams is because they seem so far out of reach. The trick to conquering that notion is to just get going. 5. “What if I only have a little success?” “What if problems arise?” “What if I get bored or frustrated?” “What if things don’t go according to plan?” These questions will help you have a contingency plan in place, or open your mind to exploring alternate avenues of success. This is important, because things rarely go as smoothly and easily as we desire. 6. “What if I train myself to just go with it?” This stand alone question will give you “stickwithitness.” Refusing to accept the possibility that something will stop you is key to not stopping. Of course my examples are based on what works for me. You need to develop your own “What If” questions that work for you, that are based on your situation, and that fit with your ideals. If you do this, especially with a loved one or very close friend, you will find it to be tremendous fun and amazingly empowering.
