Mental Energy And The Power of Self-Programming

by Dave Cleinman

To some degree everyone is burdened by “programs” that have been part of our mental inventory since we were old enough to understand the speech of others.  Some of these programs are useful: Fire is dangerous:  Yep!  Look both ways before crossing a street:  highly valid.  Move over for a siren:  absolutely!  Stop on red, go on green:  yes, if you are a safe driver.  Look before you leap: cliché AND vitally true.  Most of our mental programs are not so useful, however, and weigh us down unnecessarily.  Identifying positive programming and eliminating useless, outdated, or ineffective programming is vital for true self-control and complete harnessing of our mental energies.   Following these steps will allow us to regain control of our most precious resource, our minds!

1.  Consider what you do on a moment by moment basis.  Is it helpful and life-enhancing?  If yes, don’t change it, and considering doing more of it.  If it is not, consider what the challenge is.  What is making you do what you are doing?  Analyzing this behavior will allow you to uncover the subconscious programming that is driving it.

2.  Once you have found the programming spend a few moments thinking about it.  Is there some validity to it or is it simply irrational?  Sometimes valid programming gets twisted by influences on us.  For example we may know that doing a job and getting it done right is important.  Bad training, however, can lead to more effort than is really required to do a job, or an inefficient or even incorrect method for completing the task.  If you suddenly discover that a job is taking longer than expected or is going poorly, this might be good programming that has been corrupted by bad advice.

3.  If the programming itself is invalid, write it down, and also reject it by crossing it out and rejecting it.  Put a line through it, write the reason why the programming is flawed, and write replacement programming that is true to the situation and makes sense.

4.  Be aware of the influences on you and their impact on your mental state.  Even well-meaning friends and family can implant poor notions in your mind that become bad programming.  They don’t mean to do harm, they simply don’t know any better.  A way to determine if they are giving you sound advice is to examine their own situation.  If it is not where you want to go, or not what appeals to you, kindly ignore their advice.  An example of this is family members who discourage us from building a business, insisting that a job is more stable and has “benefits.”  Jobs are anything but stable and it is highly likely that they themselves are suffering at their jobs.  They simply are not comfortable with your level of change and are trying to divert you from it.  Well-meaning, probably so, but harmful and unwelcome.

5.  Create an action plan complete with steps, action quotas (what you will do daily) and the rationale for each step.  Start with what you want to accomplish long term, break it down into pieces, and do a step by step plan that you know will get you there.  Along the way you will discover that old programming keeps cropping up and tries to divert you.  Deal with it as it emerges.  Reprogram yourself with new concepts that help you along your path.

Mental energy requires us to be in control, regardless of past programming, and it is easy to reprogram ourselves as needed to be at our best.  If old programming is trapping us in situations that we dislike, or keeping us on a life-path that doesn’t suit us, there is no obligation to keep it!  Some simple self-analysis and a willingness to reprogram our own minds is really all that is required.  If our desire to change our situation is strong enough, the rest will follow through the actions that we take

Passion, Planning, Desire and Determination – A Magic Formula

by Dave Cleinman

As a parent of a bright and ambitious teenager often my son and I come to blows on his perception of reality and his right to control his own destiny.  Yet this is little to pay in exchange for a strong will and determination that will serve him well as an adult.  Balancing his need to be in control of his world and helping him grow up with the proper attitude and work ethic so he can make sound decisions is the ultimate challenge of parenting, and yet it is what makes it all worthwhile.

My son is now 14 and in high school, headed for an amazing career in high-end car customization and sales.  Jordan has known that he was headed into the automotive field since he was four and was given a 25 car set of Hotwheels®.  Upon opening the package Jordan's eyes lit up and the whole room of about 25 cousins, Aunts, Uncles, and grandparents heard a subtle but expressive whisper of a completely awed "WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!"

Since that time Jordan has studied cars of every sort extensively and can recognize almost any car on sight, even if it passes us on the road at high speed.  He has started his own car blog at www.bigbadautoblog.com, and recently earned the respect of teachers and adults at UTI's Powerpalooza in Orlando as he named car after car at the morning ice-breaker slide show.  He had straight As in his auto class this year, and he is establishing a wall of fame in our living room with certificates and awards.

My son may change his mind at some point and choose a different path, and that is perfectly acceptable, but somehow I don't think he will.  He shows one of the most important aspects of life-success, PASSION.  Add to the passion is a plan of action, and a deep desire to be the best car customizer/builder in the world.

This combination of personal attributes invariably leads to personal triumph.  Passion, Planning, Desire and Determination. Napoleon Hill dedicates much of “Think And Grow Rich” to these concepts, and refers to determination as faith that leads to absolute conviction and required action.  This is the magic formula for success.  And, ironically, there is no magic.  Anyone can follow this pattern to achieve success.

Passion produces drive, which keeps us going.  Determining what we are passionate about takes very little self-thought.  Usually it shows itself in every deep conversation we have.

Desire is the glue that holds our plans and passions together and keeps us moving forward.  Desire must be tangible, tasted, real.  Too often desires are cerebral, wishes and wants, not real desires that motivate to the point of no return.  When a desire for wealth, success, or achievement is great enough, that alone will propel most people to achieve their ultimate desire.

Planning enables us to take actions that are directly related to our passion and achieve goals that we set for ourselves to achieve our desires.

To sum it all up is simple.  Determine what you are passionate about.  Establish your deepest desires.  Establish a plan for achieving your desires and enlist help along the way.  As Thomas Edison so practically put it:  “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”  The good news is that when you are passionate about anything work is a joy and as self-fulfilling as anything can be.  Enjoy!
